Sasa our boss

It all started on Lipah Beach in 2006 when I Made Sudarsa alias Sasa started a small rental business of snorkelling gear, first with 5 sets, then 20 sets.

Sasa soon became a snorkelling guide and used Jukung local boats to bring the snorkellers to different spots like the Japanese Shipwreck and Lipah reef. Sasa was also active as a trekking guide to Agung volcano, Pura Lempuyang, and more.

In 2017, Sasa realized that his passion was the ocean and started thinking about running a dive center. At that time, most of the already numerous dive centers in the area, if not all, were held by Europeans.

However, in 2017, Sasa, a local Balinese man from Amed, convinced his family members to help him financially to take over the dive center Amed White Sand Divers in Lipah.

The dive center was renovated and operated with a brand new compressor and tanks and 10 scuba sets. A German Padi instructor and diving expert of the area, managed the daily operation of the new dive shop and greatly contributed to its quick success. Sasa always actively supports the local community of Amed by helping local school programs and supporting environmental awareness and conservation programs like the artificial reefs in Lipah.

Amed White Sand Divers is now composed of 12 employees, including 4 permanent dive guides and 3 scuba instructors. Sasa, Totong (maintenance) and Nengah alias Coco (dive guide) started working for the company in 2017 and are still members of WSD.

WSD became in 2022 a Padi 5-star Dive Resort, able to welcome over 100 guests in 4 VIP hotels, and dive courses are now available in 5 languages. WSD is well-known for its friendly service with high regard to Padi safety standards.

Our FAQ

Some basic helpful information

Can I choose my dive sites?2024-02-24T14:12:36+08:00

YES! with Amed White Sand Divers, FUNDIVERS REALLY CHOOSE THEIR DIVE SITES. Having the full choice of your dive site is rare and it is our priority because we want our fundivers to have an unforgettable dive time. We are a family-run dive center and we only dive in small groups of usually 2 and maximum 3 divers for 1 dive guide. What matters to us is Quality : After a check dive, you just need to talk to your dive guide to select what YOU want to dive next : reef, deep reef, macro/muck, wreck, drift, wall, cavern or guided Tec dives … All of them are World Class Diving !

When/how do I book a fundive or a dive course?2024-02-24T14:14:00+08:00

For fundives, certified divers just need to contact us the day before by 6:30pm by WhatsApp/Tel and no deposit is required.

For Dive courses, our students usually start the theory online with the Padi eLearning (for the Open Water course we recommend you to learn the chapters 1, 2 & 3 before arrival). A downpayment of 1.000.000 IDR is requested in this case.

Can I have a dive guide/Instructor who speaks my language?2024-02-24T14:16:27+08:00

At Amed White Sand Divers we offer all Padi courses in 5 languages : French, German, English, Spanish & Bahasa Indonesia. The theory is completed online with the Padi eLearning in any language.

Fundivers also have the guarantee to be able to communicate easily with our dive guides who are all totally fluent in English.

How long does it take to get certified as a PADI Open Water Diver?2024-02-26T02:54:26+08:00

At Amed White Sand Divers we usually spread the dive activities of the Open Water Course over 3 days. We also recommend our students to study the theory online with the Padi Elearning before arriving. A good understanding of the chapters 1, 2 and 3 will help your progression for underwater skills. In case a student needs more time for some skills, a solution will be found to guarantee the perfect mastery of all skills.

What is the size of your diving groups?2024-02-26T02:58:11+08:00

At Amed White Sand Divers, we care about Quality not Quantity. Our dive guides usually supervise 2 fundivers only at a time and anyways a maximum of 3. After a check dive, our fundivers can really choose where they dive (Amed or Tulamben) and what they want to do : Reef, deep reef, Macro/Muck, Wreck, Drift, Wall, cavern or guided Tec Dives.  For dive courses, we also have a maximum ratio of 1:3.

What is the best time to dive in Amed/Tulamben?2024-02-24T14:19:44+08:00

In Amed/Tulamben area, we dive all year round but the best time is from April to December. Fom January to March it is raining season and the visibility can sometimes be affected. However, on a bad day it is still possible to enjoy a macro dive or a wreck dive. Probability to spot the Mola-mola are higher from mid-June to early November.

Do you offer a dive package with accomodation?2024-02-26T03:00:43+08:00

Our dive center Amed White Sand Divers and the 4 hotels (Vienna Beach Resort, Amed Harmony, Villa Adi Amed & OnlYou Villas) are owned by the same Balinese family. It makes logistics, communication and hotel pick ups really easy. If you stay in our hotels, you get a 10% discount on all your morning fundives. We also have special offer for big groups diving and staying with us. However, for accountancy reasons, payments for accomodation and diving are separate.

How do I come to Amed White Sand Divers?2024-02-24T14:21:00+08:00

Don’t worry about that, we provide a free of charge hotel pick-up for all our dive students and fundivers staying in Amed area. We usually pick our diving guests between 8am and 8:30am depending on the hotel location and all divers are back before 2pm after morning activities. If you want to come directly to our dive center, you are welcome to use our private parking.

How much time do I need to scuba dive?2024-02-26T03:02:14+08:00

If you just want to try scuba diving without being certified, it only takes a half day : A short but important briefing about safety rules, equipment selection, 4 underwater kills in shallow water and you already find yourself surrounded by dozens of fish that you never saw before.

If you want to be certified, the first level is the Padi Open Water Course with more theory and skills : buoyancy, propulsion, mask clearing, … It is really fun and at WSD we spread this course over 3 days. It is recommended that you start the theory online with the PADI Elearning before arrival. Our experienced instructors are fully available and all have a flexible schedule to make sure you master all required skills fluently.

How can I know if I am fit to dive?2024-01-26T16:26:24+08:00

To know if you are fit to dive, you just need to answer the 10 questions of this medical form. Most of the participants to entry level courses like the Padi Open Water Course do not need a medical clearance by a doctor.

Do you also welcome Technical Divers?2024-02-11T15:35:48+08:00

You must be able to swim 200m without stopping to participate in an entry level certifying course such as the Padi Open Water course (any technique is fine and there is no timing).

However, if you just want to try diving, there is no swimming requirement : an intructor will assist you during the whole Intro Dive program.

A minimum age of 10 years is required to get certified as a Junior Open Water Diver. It is exactly the same course as the Open Water Course for adults but the maximum depth is 12m instead of 18m.
